President Hirofumi Makino and Senior Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi Met with the Founders of One Young World (OYW)
On March 18, President Hirofumi Makino and Senior Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi who is UNESCO Chairholder in Research and Education for Sustainable Development met with Ms. Kate Robertson, one of the co-founders of One Young World (OYW), the world’s largest global Summit for next-generation leaders, in the U.K.
OYW has been held 12 times worldwide, and Okayama University has been an official partner of OYW since the 2015 Summit held in Bangkok, Thailand, and sends two students and Senior Vice President Yokoi a Delegate Partner every year. In addition, OYW Hive was held simultaneously with the OYW Manchester 2022 in the U.K., where approximately 2,000 participants from more than 200 countries took part, connecting four venues worldwide, including New York, Sao Paulo, Johannesburg and Okayama, and the main venue in Manchester via a live webcast. At the meeting, which was realized in recognition of the University’s past efforts with OYW, Ms. Robertson thanked the University for creating opportunities for students to communicate with OYW proactively and actively exchange views on strengthening the collaboration in the future. President Makino and Ms. Robertson also positively discussed about how to enhance their cooperation in the future.
During this visit, OYW Bath Caucus (regional meeting) was held on the same day at the University of Bath in the U.K. Tomoki Kishaba (4th-year medical student) and Kokoro Nuno (2nd-year GDP student) from our university participated in the meeting and actively discussed with approximately 100 participants about sustainable cities and communities, quality education, good governance, and the future of the region.
Global Summit of Next-Generation Leaders
One Young World(OYW)
Since its declaration at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2009 and its holding in London, UK, in 2010, young leaders of the next generation (ages 18-30) representing more than 190 countries worldwide have gathered once a year. The Summit continues to rapidly expand in scale and network as a worldwide joint industry-government-academia next-generation leadership development project to address the global challenges facing the world.
Summit participants are awarded the title of “OYW Ambassadors” and have the opportunity to develop long-standing contacts with approximately 10,000 talented young people worldwide.
OYW counselors include Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus, prime ministers and presidents, government officials, leading Fortune 500 companies, cultural and sports figures, media, NGOs, entrepreneurs, and artists. In addition, the OYW Foundation is supported by world leaders and celebrities representing various fields such as culture, sports, media, NGOs, entrepreneurs, artists, etc.
The 2023 OYW Summit will be held in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
